Pet Food Nutrition: Dos and Don’ts

Article by Alan Joel
Have you ever tried reading the ingredient label on a bag of dog or cat food? I have and I can tell you that you pretty much have to be a scientist to understand what it means. Most labels will tell you the amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, and other nutrients in the bag of food, but does it really tell you anything about pet food nutrition? Not really. Did you know that a 40 pound bag of dog food can contain less nutrition than a 5 pound bag of dog food? When it comes to pet food nutrition, it is the quality of the food that counts, not the quantity. Unfortunately, most of the time the 40 pound bag of food costs much less per pound than the 5 pound bag of food so we buy the cheap stuff.
So how can you know that your dog or cat is getting the all the nutrition it needs to stay healthy and happy? It’s pretty hard to tell by reading the ingredients labels, but here’s a quick guide that might help you translate the stuff on the label to find out just what kind of pet food nutrition is being offered. Basically, you want to avoid as many of the following as possible:
* BHA, Ethoxyquin, BHT: these are chemical preservatives
* Low quality protein: corn, wheat, and soy are examples
* Fats: most fats added to pet food are indigestible
* Artificial flavors or colors
* Corn syrup or sugar: just as bad for your pet as for you
* Byproducts: these include animal beaks, hooves, and guts
If you were to go to the grocery store and pick out fresh food for your pet, you wouldn’t really include any of these items so try not to buy foods for your dog or cat that have these ingredients. There are commercially available dog and cat foods that do not have these ingredients and are not much more expensive than the cheaper brands. Check the internet or with your veterinarian for these brands that offer the right kind of pet food nutrition.
Another way to consider pet food nutrition is to look at basic biological requirements for cats and dogs. They are actually the same as for humans. Cats, dogs, and humans all need three basics to be healthy: probiotics, food enzymes, and minerals and trace minerals. No matter what brand of food you feed your pet, you can ensure that your cat or dog thrives by supplementing the feed with these ingredients. Here’s what each one does:
* Probiotics: support the balance of natural ‘friendly’ bacteria present in the body of all organisms (an example is Lactobacillus acidophilus)
* Food Enzymes: aid in breaking down food into forms your dog or cat can use (examples include protease, amylase, and lipase)
* Minerals and Trace Minerals: used in almost every function of the body and are more easily assimilated than synthetic minerals
By adding small amounts of these natural ingredients to your pet’s food (and you will be surprised at how little your pet needs on a daily basis) you can boost the nutrition in your pet’s food no matter what brand of food you feed. Pet food nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. Just learn to read the labels, avoid foods with a lot of harmful or artificial ingredients, and supplement with probiotics, enzymes, minerals, and trace minerals as needed.

The Problems of Poor Pet Food Storage

Article by Kenneth A. J. Scott
As a devoted pet owner, you care a great deal about your pet’s health. However, you may not know that proper pet food storage is essential to helping your pet live a long and happy life. There are a couple potential dangers to your furry friend’s food you can avoid by using proper containers which ultimately ensure that your pet’s kibble is always fresh.
In the past I didn’t think too much about pet food storage. I’d buy a big bag of cat food and just “roll down” the top of the bag thinking that would be enough protection to keep it from going bad. However, no matter how tight that bag is rolled down it’s probably not airtight. Now, you might not think that it’s a big deal for kibble since it’s already dry, but even kibble has a bit of moisture in it which keeps it soft enough for your cat or dog to chew. The faster the food dries out, the harder it becomes, which means it will be more difficult for your pet to eat. This can lead to problems with your pet’s teeth earlier in life than they would normally crop up. Proper pet food storage can easily prevent this.
Another problem that can arise from poor pet food storage is the presence of insects. When your cat or dog’s food isn’t in an airtight container, it will easily be found by bugs. Not only is the thought of ants and other vermin crawling around in your pet’s food pretty disgusting, but these insects are more likely to find their way into your living quarters just by the scent of your animal’s kibble seeping through a partially open bag or box.
As you can see, proper pet food storage is essential to not only your pet’s health, but also the cleanliness of your living space. It’s also a fairly easy problem to take care of. Take a look around your home and if you feel that your animal’s food isn’t being stored as well as it could be then it’s probably time for a new pet food storage container. So act now! Your pet will thank you in the long run

The World Pet Association Positively Impacted Communities through America’s Family Pet Expo

Article by Cindy Woudenberg
The World Pet Association finished another successful year of entertaining families and educating the public on pet care through America’s Family Pet Expo, held April 15-17 in Orange County, California, and July 8-10 in Puyallup, Washington. Known for its notable history of placing animals in forever homes and educating people on responsible pet care, this year America’s Family Pet Expo provided homes to 908 animals, raised 51 for the Pets in the Classroom grant program, and offered a new opportunity for instructive insight through the “Aquatic Experience” exhibit.
At America’s Family Pet Expo in Puyallup, Washington, the World Pet Association donated 45 booth spaces to local shelters and rescue organizations, which resulted in the adoption of 226 animals. The adopted pets at this inaugural event included 133 dogs, 55 cats, seven ferrets, 14 goats and 17 birds. Pet adoption sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals provided certificates for a free first exam at its hospitals to ensure each adoptee joins their forever family with a healthy start. Combined with adoption numbers from the April event in Orange County, California, America’s Family Pet Expo donated 179 booths and helped facilitate 908 adoptions this year, equaling more than 7,308 animal adoptions since 1996.
In addition to donating booth spaces to local shelters and rescue organizations, the World Pet Association also donated booth space to the Pet Care Trust. The Pet Care Trust hosted a Betta Fish Toss to raise funds for their Pets in the Classroom program, a grant program supporting responsible pet care in schools by providing direct, no-hassle grants to teachers to purchase or maintain pets in the classroom. The booth raised 51 for the Pets in the Classroom program and the money was donated in the name of Hikari USA.
Amongst the many educational opportunities America’s Family Pet Expo provided, the World Pet Association introduced a new educational exhibit to this year’s Expos called the “Aquatic Experience,” an innovative exhibit of 1,000 gallons filled with fish from different regions of the world. The Aquatic Experience featured a touch tank to encourage hands-on education as well as examples of how to incorporate aquaria in the home. Businesses that sponsored the “Aquatic Experience” included: Aqueon, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, CaribSea Inc, Clifford W Estes Company, Cobalt International, Hikari Sales U.S.A., Inc., Instant Ocean, Marineland, Quality Marine, Segrest Farms, Terrascapes, Tetra, Tetrafauna, The Pond Store, and The Volunteer Docents.

Holistic Pet Care For A Healthier Family

Article by Gary Le Mon
Given that holistic medicine for humans is increasing all the time, the corresponding increase in holistic pet care is no surprise. Were you aware healthful domestic pets are frequently given credit for helping create significantly more healthy households? So, what is holistic dog care and just how does it operate?
Holistic health techniques are driven by the premise that enhancement of good health and the healing of the body can only take place when the entire being is included in the plan for treatment. Every living being can be regarded as possessing an inner harmony that has to be preserved for total health.
Holistic treatment follows the belief that an animal’s body parts are interdependent upon each other, which results in good health and healing the moment each of these aspects combine and function properly. If each of an animal’s brain, organs and limbs work effectively, the pet displays good health. On the other hand, when one or more of a pet’s organs or other parts of the body fails to perform as it ought to, the pet gets poorly and usually starts to display indications of getting ill.
Designed to address the problem and not just the symptoms, holistic pet care practices treat the entire animal. Usually, all of the symptoms are checked out in great detail in order to assist with a proper diagnosis. As soon as the underlying reason for an animal’s health issues is determined, a treatment plan is created to address the origin of the problem. The animal is then able to mend and get healthy once more.
If you only treat the symptoms, the underlying cause can easily remain and fester until it results in more harm to your pet. Using holistic pet care, the animal’s symptoms evaporate as the root cause is dealt with. The practice of holistic care of pets is designed to effect a cure rather than simply make the pet appear as if he is well again. Holistic care restores a healthy balance to the inner body while at the same time realizing optimum operation because of correctly working body parts.
Many different scientific studies have concluded that family cats and dogs can have an effect on the longevity and health of those residing in the property. When a family really likes being with their cat or dog then everyone will like this sharing of time a whole lot more if their dog or cat is in perfect health. When the family dog or cat feels and looks well, less stress is involved. Obviously, it may be that folks who take good care of their dogs and cats also really look after themselves too.

Aussie Shepherd Rescue

Article by JOHN ROBBINS
If you are considering an Australian Shepherd as your new family pet you may first want to search for a rescue organization in your area. Read on just a little further before you dismiss this idea entirely. You see, the common belief that dogs in rescue shelters have behavioral or physical issues is just not the case. There are many reasons owners place their dogs in rescue organizations. Sometimes people grow too old to properly care for their dogs or they need to move to an assisted living facility which doesn’t allow pets. Other people fall on hard financial times and can’t afford proper veterinary care. Sometimes we move to another state or a different country and just can’t take the dog. Aussie Shepherd rescue organizations receive dogs for all of these reasons and will quickly tell you that the vast majority are well-behaved pets looking for a new forever home.
Unlike your local animal control organization, rescue organizations don’t operate on a timeline. They will generally keep a dog until a home if found. In this way they help avoid the needless destruction of perfectly healthy animals by putting them to sleep if an adoption doesn’t occur in a short amount of time. Aussie Shepherd rescue groups can also help you determine if the particular Aussie is a good choice for you and your home.
So why consider adopting from an Aussie Shepherd rescue organization? Well, there are a few reasons this might be the right choice for you and your family. First, you get to avoid the puppy stage. Older dogs – one year and older – don’t need potty breaks as frequently as puppies. Sure puppies are cute and cuddly but they need frequent breaks during potty training. If all the adults in the home are currently working then there may not be anyone to let the puppy out for potty breaks. Sure, you can let puppy go on paper during the day but housebreaking will take much longer. An older Aussie with a larger bladder will not have this problem. Also, puppies are more likely to misbehave simply due to their age.
Another reason you might prefer a rescue Aussie is that an Aussie who is a bit older will probably already have some obedience training from the previous owner. Rescue foster parents also frequently provide some level of training to the dogs in their care. This helps in assessing the dog’s temperament and willingness to fit into the eventual new home. The rescue organization staff will be intimately familiar with their dogs and can provide more information about the Aussie’s behavior.

The Pet Food Store

Article by Floyd P. Dietz
More and more people are allowing their pets to become a larger part of their lives. Many people that own pet food stores have come to realize that, much like kids can influence a small part of the weekly shopping budget with impulse purchases, so too can pets influence their owners’ buying habits when the pets are in the pet food store with their owner. It may seem very odd but marketing to pets is not new and has proven to be effective.
I am not suggesting that commercials are being written and produced solely with the pet in mind, but it has been suggested that pets do pay attention to certain sounds and sights that they hear and see on the television and in some small way this influences a pet’s behavior. If a pet sees something on television and then sees it in the pet food store, and then their owner tries it and the pet likes it, then the pet very well may suggest that the product in the pet food store be bought again.
Usually, though, pet products are catered to what a pet owner thinks is attractive and might take the cues from its owner as to what is a good thing or not.
Clean Up in Aisle 3
While it may seem like a great idea on the surface, it may be something you want to give some thought to before you actually do it. For some pet owners, there aren’t enough paper towels in the world to get them to take their pets shopping while other owners welcome the chance to show off their prized pet. Sometimes discretion should be the better part of valor and if you are given the choice you may want to leave Fido at home.
However, if your pet is well trained and on a leash, then you and your pets will be fine in a pet food store. Most dogs, for example, are far better behaved than human children. Sadly, for the most part, you can’t put your kids on a leash when in a pet food store. If you can take your dog, cat or ferret out for a daily walk and nothing bad happens, then the pet is ready for the pet food store.
It is your responsibility as a pet owner to be sure your pet is well behaved before going out into public settings. It’s too bad that we can’t get our kids to act half as good as our pets when out in public.
