Article by Cindy Woudenberg

The World Pet Association finished another successful year of entertaining families and educating the public on pet care through America’s Family Pet Expo, held April 15-17 in Orange County, California, and July 8-10 in Puyallup, Washington. Known for its notable history of placing animals in forever homes and educating people on responsible pet care, this year America’s Family Pet Expo provided homes to 908 animals, raised 51 for the Pets in the Classroom grant program, and offered a new opportunity for instructive insight through the “Aquatic Experience” exhibit.

At America’s Family Pet Expo in Puyallup, Washington, the World Pet Association donated 45 booth spaces to local shelters and rescue organizations, which resulted in the adoption of 226 animals. The adopted pets at this inaugural event included 133 dogs, 55 cats, seven ferrets, 14 goats and 17 birds. Pet adoption sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals provided certificates for a free first exam at its hospitals to ensure each adoptee joins their forever family with a healthy start. Combined with adoption numbers from the April event in Orange County, California, America’s Family Pet Expo donated 179 booths and helped facilitate 908 adoptions this year, equaling more than 7,308 animal adoptions since 1996.

In addition to donating booth spaces to local shelters and rescue organizations, the World Pet Association also donated booth space to the Pet Care Trust. The Pet Care Trust hosted a Betta Fish Toss to raise funds for their Pets in the Classroom program, a grant program supporting responsible pet care in schools by providing direct, no-hassle grants to teachers to purchase or maintain pets in the classroom. The booth raised 51 for the Pets in the Classroom program and the money was donated in the name of Hikari USA.

Amongst the many educational opportunities America’s Family Pet Expo provided, the World Pet Association introduced a new educational exhibit to this year’s Expos called the “Aquatic Experience,” an innovative exhibit of 1,000 gallons filled with fish from different regions of the world. The Aquatic Experience featured a touch tank to encourage hands-on education as well as examples of how to incorporate aquaria in the home. Businesses that sponsored the “Aquatic Experience” included: Aqueon, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, CaribSea Inc, Clifford W Estes Company, Cobalt International, Hikari Sales U.S.A., Inc., Instant Ocean, Marineland, Quality Marine, Segrest Farms, Terrascapes, Tetra, Tetrafauna, The Pond Store, and The Volunteer Docents.

Aussie Shepherd Rescue

Pet Rescues

Article by JOHN ROBBINS

If you are considering an Australian Shepherd as your new family pet you may first want to search for a rescue organization in your area. Read on just a little further before you dismiss this idea entirely. You see, the common belief that dogs in rescue shelters have behavioral or physical issues is just not the case. There are many reasons owners place their dogs in rescue organizations. Sometimes people grow too old to properly care for their dogs or they need to move to an assisted living facility which doesn’t allow pets. Other people fall on hard financial times and can’t afford proper veterinary care. Sometimes we move to another state or a different country and just can’t take the dog. Aussie Shepherd rescue organizations receive dogs for all of these reasons and will quickly tell you that the vast majority are well-behaved pets looking for a new forever home.

Unlike your local animal control organization, rescue organizations don’t operate on a timeline. They will generally keep a dog until a home if found. In this way they help avoid the needless destruction of perfectly healthy animals by putting them to sleep if an adoption doesn’t occur in a short amount of time. Aussie Shepherd rescue groups can also help you determine if the particular Aussie is a good choice for you and your home.

So why consider adopting from an Aussie Shepherd rescue organization? Well, there are a few reasons this might be the right choice for you and your family. First, you get to avoid the puppy stage. Older dogs – one year and older – don’t need potty breaks as frequently as puppies. Sure puppies are cute and cuddly but they need frequent breaks during potty training. If all the adults in the home are currently working then there may not be anyone to let the puppy out for potty breaks. Sure, you can let puppy go on paper during the day but housebreaking will take much longer. An older Aussie with a larger bladder will not have this problem. Also, puppies are more likely to misbehave simply due to their age.

Another reason you might prefer a rescue Aussie is that an Aussie who is a bit older will probably already have some obedience training from the previous owner. Rescue foster parents also frequently provide some level of training to the dogs in their care. This helps in assessing the dog’s temperament and willingness to fit into the eventual new home. The rescue organization staff will be intimately familiar with their dogs and can provide more information about the Aussie’s behavior.

The Pet Classifieds for Dogs

Pet Rescues

Article by Hard Times

I was going for my daily run in the park the other day. As I was doing my stretching exercises a beautiful dog started to walk up to me. I think this animal was a lab or a golden retriever. I am a pet lover and it looked a little hungry so I stopped what I was doing and went to my car to find a bag of chips. I turned around and this dog was right next to me sitting down. I started to feed this animal my bag of chips. After they were gone I started to take my daily run of 3 miles and the dog began to run with me. I started to wonder if this lab or golden retriever was lost in the park, so as I was running I was listening to see if anyone was calling out. I ran my 3 miles and I did not hear anyone call for this dog. I wondered to myself what I am going to do. I decided to take this lab or golden retriever home.

I took pictures of this dog and made flyers to put up in the park, I also went to the internet and typed in pet classifieds for lost dog to post a lost dog pet ad. I did call the dog pound and they said they would try to find the owner, for a certain amount of time and then try to adopt the dog, but after a certain amount of time they would put down this dog. There is no way I would give this dog to them.

I did not get any calls on the flyers I put up or the pet ads of lost dogs. A week went by and I just did not know what to do. Then I called a pet veterinarian and asked them if anyone was asking for this dog. They told me no one has called about a lab or a golden retriever. She seemed very nice on the phone and we were talking and she asked why not keep the dog for yourself. I told her I really cannot have a dog at this time, she said to me off the record go to http://www.bigdog66.com pet classifieds and put the dog in as a pet adoption. I said thank you I might try that.

I thought about it and decided to give it a try. I was impressed by this website, because it did not look like the same old kind of pet websites like the others I submitted it to.

This website was truly a pet classified website for pets, they had pet adoptions, lost dogs, found dogs, lost cats, found cats, pet shows, pet sitting, pet training, pet breeders, pet grooming, pet foster, animal rescue, pet boarding, pet products, pet daycare, pet insurance, pet veterinarian, pet cemetery.

I like the fact that I could post my pet ad in the state I was living in and just maybe someone would recognize this dog. What I did was post a pet ad for lost dogs, and I also posted an ad in the pet adoptions.

I got a call from a woman that offered to be a pet foster for this dog if I would still help try to find a home for this animal. I was very impressed by that and took her name and number to think about it. I got a second call from this website. She was looking for her dog it was a lab and I thought this might be the person that lost her dog. She did come out to my apartment to really look at this lab or golden retriever but it was not her dog. We talked and she said to me if I need any help with this pet she would be more than willing to help me.

I never realized how much people cared about dogs, until now. I got a call from an older woman that saw my pet ad from that website in pet adoptions and she was very interested in adopting this dog. She told me her kids are grown and she’s alone and would like to adopt a dog if it was free. I sat there and thought for a minute, and told her the story of how I got this lab or golden retriever. She said she would like to see this goldin retriever but she did not drive a car. I decided to drive out to where she was living. It was a beautiful ranch home with lots of trees and land. I really did not want to give up this lab or golden retriever, but when I met this older woman I knew this animal was going to be a very lucky pet. We did talk for a while and I knew this dog had a home. I gave her my number and told her if things do not work out please call me back and I will pick up this animal. I called her a few times and we became friends, as we would talk she would be telling me about all the wonderful things this golden retriever is doing, but the one thing I know this dog is doing is making her very happy.

Adding a New pet to your Family?

Pet Rescues

BECOMING A RESPONSIBLE HUMAN TO OUR ANIMAL COMPANIONS

Adding a pet to the family is a serious, long-term commitment. It’s a decision that needs input from everyone who would be involved in caring for the animal. Who will play with your new pet, feed and walk her/him daily? A pet needs attention and love EVERY DAY, not when it is convenient for you.
Too many people see celebrities carrying their Chihuahuas or other small breeds in their purse or bag. These pets are not an accessory. They are a living creature that deserves the dignity and care we’d want for any of our human loved ones. Often the latest blockbuster movie has everyone running out to purchase “that breed”, but then in a short period of time, the novelty wears off and our shelters become inundated with Chihuahuas, Yellow Labs, Dalmatians, bunnies, Persian cats, potbelly pigs, etc.

There is responsibility in having an animal companion. The very first challenge is: Are you choosing the right breed for your entire family? You have to consider temperament, size, safety and general compatibility with EVERYONE in the home.
Who will bathe your pet? Who will administer the monthly flea repellant? Could someone be allergic to the pet? What is the cost of neutering and spaying? Why is this a good thing to do?
Please think about how much will it cost to feed them.

Questions like:
Where do I buy quality food to feed my pet? Do I know how to read a label on the pet food or treats to make sure they are the best for my animal’s health? Do I honestly know what is in my pet’s food?
NOTE: Premium High quality food reduces your vet costs as they get fewer allergies, diseases and ailments.

How much money will it cost me annually for proper veterinary care? NOTE: Consider the age and any known condition of health at the time you have taken on care for your new pet.. Older pets are often great to get, consider your emotions and how long this pet will be in your life. Do they have any physical conditions that will cost me more at the vet? Senior animals seem to not get as easily adopted…please consider it. They are already mellow and can be less effort to train. Who would look after the animal during my trips and vacations? NOTE: You cannot leave most animals alone without at least partial human daily supervision.

]]>

Where to obtain your pet:
Instead of buying a puppy or kitten as a gift, consider looking into and possibly waiting to adopt a pet from a local shelter or breed- specific rescue group. You could give a loved one a “gift certificate” from a local shelter, or a stuffed animal representing a shelter pet. Shelters too often carry the brunt of too many decisions that are made unconsciously resulting in rejected animals being “returned”. They are Not disposable items!

Just say “no!” to buying at the pet stores:
Many pet stores purchase their animals from “puppy mills”: mass-breeding operations so bent on making a profit that they often disregard the physical, social, and emotional well-being of the animals in their facilities. Puppy mill-raised animals can suffer from neglect such as severe physical and emotional ailments, and some may even die.
NOTE: Puppy mills-The only way to put these facilities out of business is to hit them where it hurts: in the wallet. Don’t purchase an animal from a pet store.

SHELTERS ARE THE WAY TO GO ~
So instead of supporting the puppy mills or paying for a breeder to produce a live creature to be born ‘just for you!’… head to your local animal shelter and breed-specific rescue group, which are wonderful places to find a new pet. Nationwide dogs and cats in shelters can be purebred, and there are millions of healthy mixed breed animals currently awaiting good homes. Most of these shelter animals have already been spayed or neutered, and have received all their vaccinations and up-to-date veterinary checkups.

No need to be impulsive or uninformed. This is a life; a live being you are taking on, and you want to be the best you can be for your animal companion. Ask yourself: AM I BEING A RESPONSIBLE PET PARENT?
Often, when the owner decides the pet is not that cute anymore, or too much work, or they just weren’t ready for the responsibility, it is often the local shelter that takes in these animals. We need to remember that pets can’t simply be returned or discarded like a broken toy.

Because so many shelters are already filled to capacity, unless other animals are adopted out to make room for the new ones, euthanasia is a possible ending to an already sad tale. It is heartbreaking and unnecessary if we humans all took responsibility in the first place.
Please think it through. Too many wonderful creatures are returned to shelters, as people just don’t realize the responsibility of being a good pet owner and making a lifetime commitment. It will cost you money and time.

There will be bumps in the road like any relationship. Will you willing clean up their vomit? Clean their kitty litter daily? Clean the birdcage? Give a reptile the proper size environment? Is your child kind to small creatures? Do you have the patience to teach them how to be kind and properly care for your new pet?
You must be diligent about teaching your small child proper handling of your new animal companion.

A Personal Tale:
I once rescued a Pomeranian that was 5+ years old. She had been bred for 5 years of her life and “tossed out” after that. That is when I found her at a breed-specific rescue center. Somehow these sweet pets know they are being rescued; she was one of the most appreciative animals I ever had. Well behaved but a little skittish at the beginning. She was kept in a confined area when she was a “breeder” and it took her awhile to get used to her new home where with me she had freedom to move around physically and explore more, and the consistent love and attention was new for her. It took her almost a year to trust the situation and “relax” into her new home.

Give them time…they will figure it out. Rescues make wonderful companions!
All this for exchange of one of the best relationships you will have in your life. You will be rewarded with unconditional love like you have never known.

Be a responsible pet owner, your heart will be filled and you and your pet will be forever grateful to you!
