There are so many animals that are in desperate need of a loving home so if you have decided to get a cat, why not choose one from your local cat rescue home or animal shelter?
By adopting from a shelter instead of buying from a pet shop, you help those animals that are most in need to find a home and help fund the rescue work so that other cats can be saved. Many of these felines have had difficult lives so far – they may have been abandoned, abused or neglected by their owners. So, responsible rescue centres will take special care to match owner and pet and find them a good home. They will give you as much information as possible about their charges’ personalities and histories to help you choose wisely.
At the animal shelter, use your power of observation.
Take some time to just watch the cats and kittens without trying to interact with them. Observe how active they are and what type of attitude they have. A cat that stays huddled in a corner or appears lethargic may be sick, which could mean expensive vets bills in the future. Or the poor cat may nave been abused and so is terrified of everyone and everything. If you have the time and patience, please don’t automatically dismiss an abused feline. They can repay your care many times over.
Give the cat a thorough examination, starting with the eyes. Bright and clear eyes with no discharge or weepiness are a good sign.
The nose should be clean and slightly moist.Again, there should be no discharge.
Ears should also be clean. Those that are extremely dirty are potentially contaminated with ear mites which can be very difficult to eliminate and can easily spread to other cats at home.
Finally, the cat’s fur should be clean, shiny, and free of fleas. Fleas can be particularly bothersome to both the cat and to the owner. Eliminating fleas once they infest the home can be very difficult.
Listen to the cat. A cat that coughs, sneezes, or sounds congested can be quite ill and should be avoided. Also, listen for sounds of contentment. A cat who is purring is probably happy and healthy.A meow can indicate either trouble or contentment – a long, pleading meow could show that the cat is ill. On the other hand, a playful meow could mean the she is already developing a bond with its potential new owner!
Watch how the cat plays. Some pet owners are looking for playful cats that will scamper about the house and chase and play with toys. Others would prefer a more docile cat who will spend hours cuddled up in the owner’s lap.
See how they play with each other first to get a feeling for their disposition. This is particularly important for pet owners who already have a pet cat at home. Then play with the kitties yourself.
Take out a string, ball of wool or car keys and dangle them in front of each cat. The one that seems most alert and active is likely the better choice. Of course, you could always take home more than one if the decision is just too hard to make
It is so rewarding to adopt a cat from a cat rescue shelter and know that you have saved its life and given it a comfortable home but do be aware of potential problems. Any cat or kitten that comes from a shelter will be stressed to some level. This stress has put them at a higher risk of attracting a respiratory infection. They may also be more prone to bite or scratch you before you have bonded. Most cat rescue shelters offer a spayed or neutered cat, with full shots and de-worming but You must also get your cat tested immediately for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
finally, listen to the advice of the shelter workers and don’t rush into any decisions.

It’s no secret in which shelters tend to be teeming with animals needing a brand new home. This is the reason rescue cats are a great substitute for those gotten from family pet stores. Additionally, there are many other reasons why you should consider this option.
One with the biggest benefits of cat rehoming is that it’s usually more affordable than pet store cost. It’s definitely cheaper than obtaining a cat from your breeder. Furthermore, felines from shelters possess typically recently been given almost all necessary shots and may even even become neutered.
Kittens aren’t for everybody either. Cat rehoming lets you get an older pet so it’s not necessary to go from the troubles of working with a little kitten. Much like a baby, they would need to be trained. However, a mature cat may still offer you problems until he gets utilized to his fresh environment.
These are problems, there are a few problems new owners might experience with rescue pet cats. One of the very most common will be aggression. The pet shelter environment can be tough to deal with for a few animals. You’ll need to keep this in mind when coping with a fresh cat. It’s important to give him time for you to get used to you, other people in the house, and the brand new environment.
One more common difficulty is housebreaking the actual cat. It’s a wise decision to keep your new kitty in just one room so he or she doesn’t mess up the whole home. Once he starts while using litter container correctly, it is possible to let him or her roam about. You must also remember that various health-related issues can cause cats to possess litter package issues.
Pets that you simply already have at home can also be a problem when dealing with rescue pet cats. This is very true in the event that there’s one more cat as they are very territorial. On the flip side, having any companion in order to play with could be a good point.
There really are a few actions you can take to make rehoming cats a somewhat easier process. You can ask the workers in the shelter what type of food, combined with brand, how the kitty continues to be eating. Giving the same type at home will supply a measure associated with comfort.
It’s also crucial that you limit the rescue cat’s tension. Being inside a shelter is a nerve-racking experience, also it causes a lot more stress being brought to a new home. You ought to provide the cat with a safe place he can retreat to to feel at ease.
Rehoming cats can be a rewarding encounter since you might be saving a good animal’s existence. You will even save some cash as well since it’s less expensive than any breeder or perhaps pet store. Although you could experience a few problems, things is going to be fine in case you are patient and build-up trust along with your new companion slowly.

Interview with Rock-Bitch Owner (Model/Designer and Rockstar Wife) Melissa Pearcy about her new Rockstar Chic Pet Boutique
Rock-Bitch.com; Owner (Model/Designer and Rockstar Wife) Melissa Pearcy got her inspiration from her husband’s career to launch a Rockstar Chic online pet boutique; Rock-Bitch.com; “The ultimate rock gear for your pet”.
Angela: Hi Melissa, when did you first launch Rock-Bitch?
Melissa: Rock-Bitch.com launched in August of 2010.
Angela: This is a very unique idea, What inspired you to create this company? What kind of feedback are you getting from people?
Melissa: Three Years ago I created the company Not So Shabby Pets where all the pet furniture is painted white, and is in a vintage, cottage style with rose appliques. Since I am married to a Rock Musician, I decided to design a line that would be geared more towards “Rockers”. I sat down and drew out some ideas, and within the next day I got started on building my first Rock Bitch pet bed. I didn’t want to add it to my Not So Shabby Pets line, so I created a whole new business specifically for all of the Rockstar Chic items I would be selling.
I have been getting overwhelming positive feedback on everything that I carry on Rock-Bitch.com. Everyone from Rockstars to Actors, to people who just love to spoil their pets, they all find our products to be unique and high quality.
Angela: In your online photos, I see cats and small dogs. Do you sell products for larger dogs as well?
Melissa: Yes, all of our pet furniture is fully customizable so it can be built specifically for the customers needs. We also offer one of a kind vintage rock t-shirts that are handmade using vintage “human” concert tees, which are available in a variety of sizes.
Angela: Are all of your products able to be used by both dogs and cats?
Melissa: Yes, in fact I personally only have cats so the majority of the photos on the website are of my own pets (all rescues). All of my cats have their own pet bed, and believe it or not they also don’t mind wearing a rock tee every once in a while. A lot of my customers purchase for both their cats, and their dogs.
Angela: I notice you are involved with Animal Rescue and you Donate regularly to Charities. Can you tell me more about this?
Melissa: Yes, I personally donate numerous beds, feeders and other items to pet rescue groups, and in a further effort to help neglected, and homeless animals I donate a portion of all sales (as well as my own personal contributions) to The Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Society, and Kitten Rescue. I am also currently designing a line of pink products for the Susan G. Komen Fund for a Cure that I will donate 50% of all proceeds to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
Angela: That is very admirable. You also have the Not So Shabby Pets website. When did this launch?
Melissa: Not So Shabby Pets was launched three years ago.
Angela: Thank you Melissa. I’ve explored your online boutiques and can confirm first hand you do have some of most unique pet items I’ve ever seen. To learn more about Melissa’s online boutiques, visit: http://rock-bitch.com and http://notsoshabbypets.com
