It is time, right now, that you start to pay close attention to the ingredient list on the pet foods that you buy at the store. This article is dedicated to that need and what you learn here will forever change your attitude about commercial pet food. We have already seen what happened last year on the pet food recall due to using contaminated melamine as a protein source.
That is just the tip of the iceberg as to what also goes on in the manufacture of pet foods. There are some other things that are just as bad if not worse and the sad thing is we pet owners spend a huge amount of money feeding our pets poor quality food that will eventually affect your pet’s health and life span.
Seems odd that just a few months ago I was blogging about homemade cat toys and condo’s and now I am pursuing the value of commercial cat food. In a past blog I had quoted several veterinarians, that cats did not produce enzymes to digest grains in their feed. Yet almost every can, pouch, or bag lists some type of grain, (wheat, corn, oat, or rice).
There is also evidence that feeding cats grains will cause stress to the kidneys causing renal failure. There are also other kinds of carbohydrates in the ingredient list that have no value to a cat’s nutrition such as soy and potato. One has to ask the question why do they use this and the answer is cost. It is cheaper to add grain protein so the nutrition values look good on paper but have nothing to do with a proper diet for a carnivore.
This is all filler so for your cat to have the proper level of good useable protein it would have to consume 2 to 3 times as much as recommended on the label. You get the picture real quick, make it cheaper and feed the cat more so you buy more frequently. The almighty dollar comes before your pet’s health and that is what is wrong with the pet food business.
This is not a highly regulated business like human food so a lot of cheap sources of protein are used and unfortunately are not good for your pet’s long term health. Oh, but it is so convenient to pop open the can or scoop out the kibble without much fuss or mess. This is great and easy for us but not so great for your pet and its health.
Over the last two months I have been blogging about feeding your dog or cat a natural or raw food diet supplementing or reducing the amount of commercial food. There are several brands that are grain free that can be considered but watch out for another nasty protein additive.
This one is gross if not criminal in my mind and that is using protein from rendering plants and replacing good fresh protein with another cheap source. It is usually listed as protein concentrate, bone and protein meal, protein byproducts, or any other non-specific animal protein wording. What I mean is the obvious words like protein from chicken, beef, or fish are not listed meaning this comes from many sources.
Because the pet food industry is not highly regulated this rendered protein and fats are considered acceptable sources of feed for animals. It consists of sick or diseased animals not fit for human consumption and can even be “road kill” animals or worse euthanized cats and dogs from the pound or shelters.
At this point I am totally grossed out and perhaps cooking for my pets is not such a chore after all. Most of it can be fed raw or just heated so it is warm and not to cold. Also I have noticed some smaller businesses starting to produce quality pet food for your convenience. Yes it may cost more but less is needed per feeding compared to other cheaper commercial products.
Artificial additives such as flavoring and color plus the addition of preservatives to extend shelf life of the feed up to two years is not what I would consider as healthy additives. I can understand why it is in the feed but you need to ask yourself what will be the consequences of using these products and how much will it cost in future medical bills.

When family pets are injured, pet first aid kits are vital to have available because they are going to provide the basic medical supplies needed to prevent bleeding and forestall infection. They can buy valuable time while waiting for your pet to be treated by a professional vet. For instance, my family once had a little terrier named Frank. Our beloved dog had been a family pet for quite a while and had reached what would be considered an old age for a dog. One day, while the family was enjoying a lovely day in the backyard, he was attacked by a large doberman. I had seen the doberman roaming the area, but was never anxious as he seemed friendly enough. Our pet was left with large cut which we weren’t able to care for since pet first aid kits were not something our family thought would become vital to have in a minute’s notice. In this instance, we had to improvise with kitchen towels and shoestring to apply pressure and prevent more blood loss. We managed to get our pet to the emergency vet’s office, but because of his old age, he did not live. Had our pet been a little younger and in better health, and had pet first aid kits been a family priority, he may have lived through the attack. You should also bear in mind that when using the items in these kits, your pet may be hurting which might result in a severe bite or scratch to the person treating the injury. Even the most friendly pets will strike out when they feel trapped and are under pressure.Let us take a look at the only way to handle an event where an animal is in danger of losing its life. One scenario might involve a dog who has been hit by a vehicle and is now besieged under the auto. Actually the most vital thing you can do, lacking the presence of being trained in this kind of rescue, is to simply assure the dog until help arrives. Dogs in this type of situation will be extremely upset and unwell tempered and may strike out and bite anybody that gets too close. You must only think about using pet first aid kits when the dog is unconscious or is physically unable to bite its rescuer. In any sort of emergency animal rescue, call the gurus because they have been trained in every kind of emergency that you can imagine. In addition, they are going to have pet first aid kits available as well as the mandatory equipment to execute the job correctly. You will most likely be encouraged to get embroiled, especially if it’s your own pet, but if it isn’t safe to do so you might end up making the situation even worse. Administering pet first aid should nearly always be handled by an experienced animal rescue expert.Pet first aid kits usually contain the same basic items that any human first aid kit would contain, but also include a guide which is specific to the treatment of animal injuries.Even the most fundamental pet first aid kits, if kept convenient, can save your pet’s life in an emergency. It’s no secret in which shelters tend to be teeming with animals needing a brand new home. This is the reason rescue cats are a great substitute for those gotten from family pet stores. Additionally, there are many other reasons why you should consider this option.
One with the biggest benefits of cat rehoming is that it’s usually more affordable than pet store cost. It’s definitely cheaper than obtaining a cat from your breeder. Furthermore, felines from shelters possess typically recently been given almost all necessary shots and may even even become neutered.
Kittens aren’t for everybody either. Cat rehoming lets you get an older pet so it’s not necessary to go from the troubles of working with a little kitten. Much like a baby, they would need to be trained. However, a mature cat may still offer you problems until he gets utilized to his fresh environment.
These are problems, there are a few problems new owners might experience with rescue pet cats. One of the very most common will be aggression. The pet shelter environment can be tough to deal with for a few animals. You’ll need to keep this in mind when coping with a fresh cat. It’s important to give him time for you to get used to you, other people in the house, and the brand new environment.
One more common difficulty is housebreaking the actual cat. It’s a wise decision to keep your new kitty in just one room so he or she doesn’t mess up the whole home. Once he starts while using litter container correctly, it is possible to let him or her roam about. You must also remember that various health-related issues can cause cats to possess litter package issues.
Pets that you simply already have at home can also be a problem when dealing with rescue pet cats. This is very true in the event that there’s one more cat as they are very territorial. On the flip side, having any companion in order to play with could be a good point.
There really are a few actions you can take to make rehoming cats a somewhat easier process. You can ask the workers in the shelter what type of food, combined with brand, how the kitty continues to be eating. Giving the same type at home will supply a measure associated with comfort.
It’s also crucial that you limit the rescue cat’s tension. Being inside a shelter is a nerve-racking experience, also it causes a lot more stress being brought to a new home. You ought to provide the cat with a safe place he can retreat to to feel at ease.
Rehoming cats can be a rewarding encounter since you might be saving a good animal’s existence. You will even save some cash as well since it’s less expensive than any breeder or perhaps pet store. Although you could experience a few problems, things is going to be fine in case you are patient and build-up trust along with your new companion slowly.

Some of the ingredients that end up in commercial pet foods are truly shocking. What’s more, many of these will not appear on the label and others are hidden under umbrella terms such as ‘meat meal’ and ‘meat by-products’. How can this happen? The pet food industry is highly unregulated. As Ann Martin, author of Foods Pets Die For, writes in her article The Pet Food Industry and its Questionable Practices, ‘Governments in the USA and Canada regulate the labeling of the food, the name and address of the company, the weight of the product, and whether it is made for a dog or cat – nothing more.’
The meats used in pet food can be extremely low grade and unfit for human consumption. Summarized as the ’4 D’s’ (dead, diseased, disabled and dying), these can include roadkill, zoo animals and infected and cancerous meats.
At the rendering plants ingredients are highly heated and processed, destroying nutrients and enzymes, with strong preservatives added which do not appear on the labels. These include fat stabilizers such as BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene), both of which are known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction and Ethoxyquin, a suspected cancer-causing agent. Semi-moist dog foods may also contain propylene glycol, a relation to ethylene glycol (anti-freeze), which can destroy red blood cells.
Pets in your pet food
Though reportedly not the case today, it is well recorded that dogs and cats have ended up in dog and cat food. In his 1990 article How Dogs and Cats Get Recycled Into Pet Food, John Eckhouse, an investigative reporter, wrote: ‘Each year, millions of dead American dogs and cats are processed along with billions of pounds of other animal materials by companies known as renderers. The finished products — tallow and meat meals — serve as raw materials for thousands of items that include cosmetics and pet food.’
Doctor of weterianry medicine Wendell Belfield in Foods Not Fit For a Pet (Earth Island Journal, 1996), reports that ‘federal and state agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration and medical groups such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and the California Veterinary Medical Association, confirm that pets, on a routine basis, are rendered after they die in animal shelters or are disposed of by health authorities, and the end product frequently finds its way into pet food.’
The very use of grains in pet food is questionable as grains are ill-suited to the digestive physiology of carnivores. This is especially so for cats who are obligatory carnivores and meet their glucose requirements through amino acids in their diet. Further, the grains used in dog and cat foods may contain mycotoxins, fungi that can cause chronic conditions and even death in both humans and animals. As the grains used in pet food are low grade, they are dealt with last in the handling process and because of this are often left in storage where insects, mites and mycotoxic molds can grow.
The consumption of dead mites can cause skin allergies. If your pet has skin allergies, change their diet first before turning to steroids which can be seriously detrimental to your pets health.
Alfatoxin poisoning, a common mycotoxin that grows on corn as well as other foods, has been reported for over 50 years. Vomotoxin is another mycotoxin found in wheat products. Where large doses of mycotoxins can cause cancer and even rapid death, small continuous amounts may suppress the immune system and damage organs over time, leading to long-term chronic health conditions.
Just recently at the end of 2005, over 100 dogs were killed in the United States because of alfatoxin found in pet food, with some 19 brands of Diamond dog food being recalled. It is likely there were many more deaths than those reported, and as alfatoxin attacks the liver it is likely surviving dogs may develop chronic liver disease or liver cancer in the future.
The toxin sodium pentobarbital, a chemical is used to euthanize animals and pets, has been found in commercial pet foods. The US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine performed two studies (1998 and 2000) to test for pentobarbital. Of the 74 samples analysed, over half were found to contain pentobarbital. What’s more, none of the 43 brands and product lines that tested positive warned of its presence on their labels.
The FDA researchers also tested the food for the presence of dogs or cats but reported none present. It was believed the pentobarbital residues were entering pet foods from euthanized, rendered cattle or even horses.
The FDA say the small amounts of the drug found in these foods were harmless, but not all veterinarians agree. Long-term continual doses, even at small levels may be increase the onset of chronic and degenerative diseases.
Aside from the toxins and base ingredients of commercial pet foods, these harshly processed and high-carbohydrate products in no way match the natural diets dogs and cats would have eaten in the wild. They are species-inappropriate and ill-suited to canine and feline physiology. I recommend healthy, homemade, raw diets or optimum natural, holistic alternatives for the health and well-being of your dog and cat. Before embarking on a raw food diet (otherwise known as BARF – ‘biologically adequate raw food’), thoroughly research the area first as nutritional balance is essential.
